Finding a job that is right for you is the first thing that comes to your mind after graduating and when you are just starting your career. Landing a job that makes sense for you and makes you happy is something that is always your priority. Moreover, performing well at that job when you get it is also very crucial. But something that is also very important to take into consideration and is often ignored is what to do when the job is just not right for you.
Sometimes people are so engaged in just getting a job that they fail to realise that a job they have landed may not be correct for them. Even though getting fired can be quite scary but quitting and looking for new career options can often be way harder. It can take you years to work up the courage to do it, even when you hate your current job. Realising that a job is not right for you and leaving it respectfully and thoughtfully is just part of being a professional adult. If you constantly feel like you are always working overtime and you have no time left for yourself, then it is very natural that your personal life and health will suffer. Unhealthy relations at work
A lot of times, you may find the workplace environment toxic in terms of how employees interact with each other. Socialising with your coworkers is not mandatory. You have the choice of maintaining a professional relationship with your coworkers. However, some organisations may expect you to indulge in involuntary socialising. Even if your superior is your friend, that should not stop you from leaving if you know that the environment is toxic for you.
Growth
You may feel like you have hit a wall where you have just stopped learning and evolving in your job. There are going to be slower, and more interesting times in your career but if at the end of the day you can look back at a year at a job and not identify one big skill that you have learned or improved on then that is a big red flag. When you have been in an organisation for a very long time, it is very natural for you to start getting comfortable with it. But growth and constant learning are important for your career. If you find yourself in a position where at the end of the year you can’t look at your work and identify your growth over time, then it is time for you to look for a new job.
If you are not able to answer the question, ”How are you essential to the organisation?”, then this is a clear indication that you need new career options.
